Legacy

Vibrant Public Activity: The Evolution

Nick Milkovich was part of the original team working on the original 3-block complex. From the time of its inception with Arthur Erickson, to the completion of the new Robson Plaza, Nick–and now his firm, has been involved in numerous proposals for Robson Square.

The legacy of the project has always been guided by the principle of strengthening the space for civic and public life.

We are excited to complete the original vision for Robson Street as a pedestrian precinct at Robson Square.

Now we can enjoy the intent of the original vision.

What Could Have Been

Over time, there have been many proposals for redesign of the plaza.
Pictured here is a vision of the future from a revitalization study in the 90s.

The Redesign Team

The Robson Plaza project was a collaboration with Nick Milkovich Architects and Hapa Collaborative. Commissioned by the City of Vancouver Engineering department and the Province of British Columbia, this project was completed with the help of our expert consultants:

Nick Milkovich Architects is passionate about working with people who want to set new standards—people willing to challenge their consultant team to come up with the best, most unique, solution possible within the given parameters. Striving for excellence is mandatory.

Since 1991, NMA has planned, designed and overseen the construction of almost every type of building and project—from single-family residences to museums, and from land use plans to large-scale urban designs, in locations of widely varying environments including Canada, the United States, Asia and the Middle East.

Their practice is based on the conviction that every project is unique no matter its size, location, or the demands of time and cost. Each project becomes its own elegant solution to a set of conditions that only ever intersect once.

Hapa Collaborative

Hapa Collaborative is a landscape architecture and urban design practice, deeply committed to the creation of connected and livable communities.

As our world urbanizes, our cities densify, and our personal and private spaces diminish, public space becomes increasingly vital. The shaping of these spaces as vibrant, enduring communities of social energy is the heart of what they do. They like to draw people into the public realm, inspiring them to spend time outside and connect with their world.

They are agents for public space. Hapa’s aim is to deepen the attachment between people, their communities, and their environments across the whole of North America. They do this by revitalizing forgotten spaces, turning them into dynamic, intricate parts of a larger connected whole.

What Do You Think?

What do you think about Vancouver’s newest plaza? We would love to hear your comments, feedback, and a few words about what this place means to you!

Public spaces are in their very nature democratic, so the process by which we design them must be equally egalitarian.
